Interested in Preparedness? What, even, is that? Texas State University in San Marcos:
Do you know a high school student who is passionate about emergency preparedness and community resilience? If so, they should apply to be on the Texas Youth Preparedness Council!
TheTexas Youth Preparedness Councilis a statewide youth group made up of youth leaders from across the state who are interested in preparedness and making their communities more resilient. The mission of the council is to engage and empower youth in individual and community preparedness activities and roles. The council provides an opportunity for Texas high school students to enhance their knowledge of preparedness and develop leadership skills that will help them in addressing the needs of their communities. Youth will work on local preparedness projects, beambassadors for youth preparedness on the state level, and provide a unique perspective to state agencies interested in preparedness.

SAT College Board Opportunity Scholarships
The College Board Opportunity Scholarships program opens in December for your juniors. Save the getting started steps below and schedule a kick-off activity before winter break.
Early efforts will get rewarded! Students who've already taken action to build their college list onBigFuture™andlink their College Board and Khan Academy® accountsto practice for the SAT® on Official SAT Practice will automatically earn a scholarship entry when they join the program once it opens next month.
Getting Your Juniors Started in December
Students shouldjoin the programby signing in with their existing College Board account (same one they used for the SAT and PSAT/NMSQT®) or they cancreate an accountif they don’t have one.
They should click on the yellowEarn Scholarshipsbutton at the top of the homepage.
They should review the official rules on theOpt Inscreen and clickAgree. Then they’re ready to start turning their efforts into scholarships!

ETREYS – East Texas Rural Electric Youth Seminar
ETREYS is and all expenses paid camp where students come together to foster positive ideas and values, enhancing leadership skills, problem-solving and interpersonal relationships in a wholesome environment. AND…it’s a whole lot of fun!!!
You must have either Cherokee County Electric Cooperative Electric Service or Upshur-Rural Electric Cooperative Electric Service in order to apply. This is for current juniors and takes place this summer at a local college campus. The seminar consists of workshops, presentations, and peer group activities. There are several functions and free-time activities to develop life-long friendships and have fun and relaxation.
Speakers include nationally-known personalities, college professors, and community leaders. Session topics range from leadership development to pure entertainment.
BTW, you can also win scholarships!!!
The applications will be available in the counselor’s office by January 31, so come on down, walk by, say hi and pick up and application on 1/31/20.
Exciting Opportunity for SAT or ACT Prep - Posted 12/19/19
The University of Texas at Tyler is partnering with Capstone Advising to offer free SAT preparatory courses for high school students in preparation for the upcoming SAT test held on March 14, 2020. Courses will be offered at the Tyler, Longview, and Palestine campuses and available to 30 students at each location.
The course will begin on Saturday, February 15 and will conclude on Saturday, March 7 in preparation for the March 14 SAT test. Each course will be led by the experienced instructors at Capstone Advising, and lunch will be served during each session.
The Tyler, Longview, and Palestine prep courses will hold up to 30 students, and a confirmation e-mail will be sent after registration is complete to the students that have obtained a spot. The additional students will be kept on a waiting list and notified as spots become available.
